Mid-winter is a good time to do a quick electrical “refresh.” By this point, heaters have been running for weeks, lights are on longer every day, dryers and dehumidifiers have had plenty of use, and any weak points in outlets or circuits tend to show themselves. This checklist is visual-only—simple things you can look and feel for safely. If anything looks damaged, smells hot, or trips repeatedly, stop and get it checked.
The 7-point mid-winter checklist (visual-only)
1. Cords and plug tops: check for splits, crushing, taped repairs, or scorch marks (especially heaters, dryers, dehumidifiers, kitchen appliances).
2. Outlets and switches: look for cracks, looseness, discolouration, or anything that looks heat-stressed.
3. Repeated tripping: if a breaker or safety switch is tripping more than once, treat it as a fault indicator—not an inconvenience.
4. Smoke alarms: confirm they’re present, working, and covering sleeping areas and hallways.
5. Switchboard access: keep the area clear so you can reach it quickly and safely (especially during outages).
6. Overload habits: check for “permanent temporary” multiboxs/extension leads (especially where high-load appliances are running).
7. Rodent indicators: listen for scratching and look for droppings/nesting in roof/shed spaces—especially if there are new electrical symptoms (flicker, unexplained trips).
Stop and get it checked if you notice any of these
Burning or “hot plastic” smells near outlets, appliances, or the switchboard
Buzzing or crackling from a socket, switch, light fitting, or the switchboard
Warm/hot outlets or plugs during normal use
Scorch marks or discolouration around outlets, switches, or plug tops
Tripping that repeats even after reducing appliance use
