Autumn is when small electrical annoyances have a habit of turning into bigger winter problems. The heaters come out, the lights are on longer, the dryer runs more often—and suddenly circuits that “usually cope” start tripping. A quick, visual-only check now can help you spot warning signs early and book the right work before winter demand hits.
Common warning signs to take seriously
Flickering or dimming lights (especially when appliances turn on)
Warm or discoloured switches/outlets (yellowing, browning, or softened plastic)
Buzzing or crackling sounds from a socket, switch, or switchboard
Circuits that trip repeatedly (more than once is a sign to investigate)
Burning or “hot plastic” smells near plugs, outlets, or the switchboard
Extension leads and multiboxes becoming part of the “permanent wiring” (a sign you may need more outlets or a circuit upgrade)
Simple safe checks you can do (visual-only)
Walk the house and look at outlets and switches. You’re looking for cracks, discolouration, loose plates, or anything that looks heat-stressed.
Check cords and plugs on frequently used appliances (heaters, dryers, kettles, dehumidifiers). If the insulation is damaged, pinched, or the plug looks scorched—stop using it.
Look at how you’re powering winter appliances. If one multibox is feeding multiple high-power items, plan to change that setup before winter.
Make sure the switchboard area is clear and accessible. If you ever need to turn off a circuit quickly, you don’t want to be moving boxes in the dark.
Note any rooms that “never have enough power points.” If you’re constantly reaching for multiboxes, that’s a practical sign to add outlets.
When it’s time to book an inspection
Book a licensed electrician if you’ve noticed any burning smells, buzzing, heat at outlets/switches, or repeat tripping—those are “act now” symptoms. It’s also worth booking if you’re heading into winter with an older switchboard, you’re adding heating, or you’re planning renovations and want the electrical side done safely and compliantly.
